Shepherd of the Valley
Baptisms at SOV

Baptism is one of the two sacraments we recognize in the Lutheran Church (the other being holy communion). It is one of God's "Means of Grace", in that through baptism God freely gives God's self to the baptized person and makes the gift, which is by definition, free. There is nothing we need to do to earn it. Indeed, there is nothing we could ever do to earn such a wonderful and eternal gift. The emphasis in baptism then, is not on what we do, but on what God does. In baptism God forgives sin and makes the one baptized a member of God's holy family, with all the gifts that membership entails:  continual forgiveness of sin, love, comfort, courage, faith, trust, hope, and the promise of eternal life in the Kingdom of God.
