Dr. David Michael Marz, Senior Pastor

I am excited to be new to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.  After arriving in August of 2015, I have loved getting to know the awesome diversity of people who live in this community.  My passion is to help people grow in faith, hope, and service of others in the name of Jesus. For those maybe interested, here is a little of my personal history.

My early years were filled with sports in school and doing fun things with friends such as going toMarzFamilyphoto the beach and fishing.  I grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida during the time of huge MTV parties on the beach and in the shadows of the NASCAR racetrack. As a kid, my family and church family nurtured me in faith and life.  I would not be who or where I am in life without that constant love, encouragement, and demonstration of Grace.  Being called to Gospel ministry was not on my early radar, but ever since saying yes to God, my life has been a thrill ride.

Before coming to Shepherd of the Valley in 2015, I served Lutheran churches in Gilbert and Tucson, AZ; Chicago, IL; and as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy.  I love to read and study. I received  my Master's of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, a Master's in Systems Theory from the University of Chicago, and my Doctorate in Homiletics (preaching) in the area of Missional Stewardship (funny words for preaching how we manage our lives to make it a better world).  I serve the larger synod (a group of some 100 churches) as the Chair of the Mission Table for Stewardship and was a Dean (helper to the Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod) to our east Valley Lutheran congregations.  My wife Charlotte is a huge source of love and together we have the joy of raising our daughter Hana Michael. We live in downtown Phoenix and are huge Phoenix Suns fans. Go Suns!

My family and new church family, for whom I have deep respect, are great gifts from God. I continue to learn so much with and through the relationships formed with the diverse people of Phoenix.  I am excited for what we can do together in the future and look forward to a shared future of purpose, service and ministry.   You are welcome to call or Email Me so we might have a connection in faith and life.  If you are on Facebook, let's become friends. Thanks for visiting this web site.

A learner of Jesus who wishes to live and die being the church Jesus had on His mind when He hung on the cross,

Pastor David
